Etymology
Στυλό is a direct borrowing from French stylo, itself a shortening of stylographe, an instrument for writing. The French word traces back to Latin stilus, a pointed writing tool, whose spelling was later reshaped under the influence of the unrelated Greek word στῦλος (pillar, column). So modern Greek re-imported, via French, a word whose form looks Greek but whose real root is Latin. The everyday short form στυλό has largely replaced the fuller στυλογράφος in speech.
