Etymology
Ποσοστό is built from πόσο(ς), the Greek word for 'how much', plus the ordinal suffix -οστό that also appears in εκατοστό (hundredth) and χιλιοστό (thousandth). The pattern originally turned a number into a fraction, as in 'the hundredth part'. Ποσοστό generalizes that pattern to an unspecified quantity, giving 'the how-manieth part', which settled into the modern sense of a rate or share out of a whole.
