Etymology
Μπύρα entered Modern Greek in the 19th century as a loanword, most likely through Italian birra. Italian birra itself came from a Germanic source related to German Bier. The ultimate origin of the Germanic word is debated among linguists, so no single ancestor root can be stated with confidence. The genitive form μπύρας simply adds the standard Greek feminine genitive singular ending -ας to the borrowed stem.
