Etymology
Λιοντάρι grew out of the ancient Greek word λέων (leon), meaning lion. Speakers built a new form from the genitive stem λέοντ- plus the suffix -άρι, giving λεοντάρι(ον), which later shifted in pronunciation to λιοντάρι. The ancient λέων itself was likely borrowed from a Semitic language, since lions were not native to Greece and Greek had no inherited word for them.
