Etymology
ίσα is the neuter plural of the adjective ίσος, meaning equal. Greek regularly turns a neuter plural adjective into an adverb, so ίσα came to mean equally, and later developed idiomatic uses like ίσα ίσα (on the contrary) and ίσα που (just, barely). ίσος itself descends from Ancient Greek ἴσος, but its deeper origin is not settled among linguists.
