Word family
Etymology
A univerbation of the preposition εξ (ek, 'from, out of') and ίσου, the genitive singular of the adjective ίσος ('equal'). The frozen prepositional phrase 'from equal' came to function as a single adverb meaning 'to an equal degree'. The base adjective ίσος is inherited from Ancient Greek ἴσος, whose deeper origin is uncertain.
