Etymology

Modern Greek χοντρός descends from Ancient/Koine χονδρός, the adjective derived from χόνδρος 'grain, groats, cartilage', hence 'coarse-grained, lumpy' and later 'thick, fat'. The shift from 'granular/coarse' to 'thick, bulky, stout' is well attested through Medieval Greek. The deeper origin of χόνδρος itself is uncertain and is often regarded as Pre-Greek.
