Etymology
Modern Greek κατεβάζω is a compound of the bound prefix κατε- 'down' (from Ancient Greek κατά) and βάζω 'to put, place'. It is the transitive (causative) counterpart of κατεβαίνω 'to go down', paralleling pairs such as ανεβαίνω/ανεβάζω 'go up / take up'. The βα- element ultimately traces to the Ancient Greek verb βαίνω 'to go, step'.
