Etymology
A compound of the adverb εὖ ('well, good') and τύχη ('fortune, luck, chance'), literally 'having good fortune'. It is already attested in Ancient Greek as εὐτυχής meaning 'lucky, prosperous, successful'. The element τύχη comes from the verb τυγχάνω ('to hit upon, to happen'). Over time the sense drifted from external good luck toward an inner state of happiness.
