θέλωto want, to be willingEtymology
From Ancient Greek ἐθελοντής 'one who acts of his own free will, volunteer', built on the stem of ἐθέλω (later θέλω) 'to be willing, to want' plus the agentive ending -τής. The sense narrowed over time to a person who offers services without compulsion or pay, including military enlistment by choice. The deeper Indo-European origin of ἐθέλω/θέλω is debated and not securely reconstructed.
