Etymology

Modern Greek γεμίζω descends from Ancient Greek γέμω 'to be full, be laden,' recast as an active transitive verb with the productive suffix -ίζω, so it means 'to make full.' The root traces to PIE *gem- 'to grasp, press together,' the image of things packed tight that lies behind a full vessel. The related noun γόμος 'cargo, ship's load' preserves the older sense of a densely packed load.
