Etymology

A compound of αἰχμή ('spear point') and ἁλωτός ('captured, taken'), the verbal adjective of ἁλίσκομαι ('to be caught, to be taken'). The literal sense is 'taken by the spear', i.e. captured in battle. The first element αἰχμή has been compared with Lithuanian iešmas 'spit, skewer', though its ultimate origin remains uncertain and may be Pre-Greek.
