Etymology
Modern Greek θρύλος descends from Ancient Greek θρῦλος, which denoted the confused murmur of a crowd, common talk, or rumor. The sense gradually shifted from 'what everyone keeps repeating' to a traditional tale handed down through generations, and finally to a 'legend' or a legendary person. It is connected to the ancient verb θρυλέω 'to chatter, repeat constantly, noise abroad.' The ultimate origin is generally regarded as onomatopoeic, imitating murmuring speech.
