Etymology
Modern Greek ρίζα descends directly from Ancient Greek ῥίζα (rhíza) 'root'. It traces back to the Proto-Indo-European root for 'root', which also gave Latin rādīx and English 'root'. The botanical English term 'rhizome' is borrowed straight from the Greek.
