Ευτυχισμένος is the passive participle of the verb ευτυχίζω, formed from ευ- (well, good) and the root of τύχη (fortune, chance). Literally it describes someone made good-fortuned, and over time this settled into the ordinary word for happy. The root of τύχη is tied to the verb τυγχάνω, to hit the mark or happen upon, but its deeper origin is disputed among linguists and may come from a pre-Greek substrate rather than a clear Indo-European root.
