Etymology
The word joins the prefix σύν, meaning with or together, to a form of φωνή, meaning voice or sound. Together they describe things that sound together, or agree. Ancient Greek used the same compound for musical harmony and for verbal accord, and modern Greek kept the everyday sense of agreement while a related noun, σύμφωνο, came to mean both a consonant sound and a pact.
