Etymology

Διαφωνώ combines the prefix δια- (through, apart, across) with a verb built on φωνή, meaning voice or sound. The compound originally suggested voicing something apart or differently, a sense that shifted to holding a different opinion or being in discord. The same φων- root gives the noun διαφωνία, disagreement, and its exact opposite, συμφωνώ, to agree. The deeper origin of φωνή itself is debated among linguists, so no further root is claimed here.
