Etymology
Formed from the noun φωνή ("voice, sound") with the productive denominative verb-forming suffix -άζω, so the literal sense is roughly "to give voice, to raise one's voice." φωνή itself goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root *bʰeh₂- "to speak, say," the same root behind Greek φημί "I say."
