Etymology

Derived from Ancient Greek ζεῦγος (zeûgos) 'yoke, pair of yoked animals', through the diminutive ζευγάριον (zeugárion). The root belongs to the family of ζεύγνυμι (zeúgnymi) 'to yoke, join together', so a ζευγάρι is literally a set of two things joined like oxen under a single yoke. The sense broadened from yoked beasts to any matching pair and to a couple of people.
