Etymology
From Ancient Greek αἴσθησις (aísthēsis) 'perception, sensation', a deverbal noun built on αἰσθάνομαι (aisthánomai) 'to perceive, feel'. This traces back to a PIE base meaning 'to perceive', the same source proposed for Latin audiō 'I hear'. The Modern Greek form continues the ancient noun, with the ending -ση replacing the older -σις.
