Etymology
An unadapted loan into Modern Greek from English 'sheriff,' spread chiefly through American Western films, comics, and literature. The English word goes back to Old English 'scīrgerēfa,' a compound of 'scīr' (shire, district) and 'gerēfa' (reeve, royal official). In Greek it denotes the chief law officer of an American county and carries no native institutional meaning.
