Etymology

Modern Greek όρος 'term, condition' descends from Ancient Greek ὅρος (with rough breathing) 'boundary, landmark, limit,' which extended to 'definition' and to a 'term' in logic, law and mathematics. From the same family come ὁρίζω 'to bound, define' and its many derivatives. It is a homograph of neuter ὄρος (smooth breathing) 'mountain,' a separate word whose spelling merged with this one after breathings were abandoned. The deeper origin of ὅρος is uncertain and may be Pre-Greek.
