Etymology

The word comes directly from English "sheriff". English sheriff descends from Old English scīrgerēfa, a compound of scīr (shire, district) and gerēfa (reeve, official). Greek absorbed the word in the 20th century, largely through American Western films, and adapted it with the native masculine ending -ης. It denotes an American county law officer and has no equivalent native Greek institution.
