Μεριά descends from Ancient Greek μερίς (genitive μερίδος), meaning a share or portion, which in turn comes from μέρος, part. The origin of μέρος itself is not settled; some scholars link it to a root for allotting a share, but others treat it as pre-Greek. Over time μεριά narrowed from an abstract 'share' to a concrete 'side' or 'direction'.
