Etymology

The word is a compound of the prefix προ- (before, forth) and the verb έρχομαι (to come, to go). Together they form a sense of coming forth from a point of origin. The prefix προ- is well attested across Indo-European languages; the root of έρχομαι itself is suppletive in Ancient Greek, drawing on more than one older verb stem, so its deeper origin is less certain.
