Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek ἀδυναμία, built from the privative prefix α- (not, without) and δύναμις (power, strength), with the abstract noun suffix -ία attached. The literal sense is the state of being without power. Beekes and other etymologists treat the root of δύναμαι as of uncertain, possibly pre-Greek origin, so no secure Indo-European root can be given.
