Etymology

The verb επιτίθεμαι comes from επί (upon, against) plus τίθεμαι, the middle voice of τίθημι (to place, to put). Together they originally meant to place oneself upon someone, which shifted to the sense of attacking. Modern Greek kept it as a deponent verb: its forms are mediopassive in shape but active in meaning.
