Etymology

θυσία comes from the ancient verb θύω, which meant to make a burnt offering or to sacrifice, and originally referred to smoke rising from a fire. The suffix -σία turns the verb into an abstract noun of action, so θυσία literally names the act of sacrificing. θύω is traced to the Proto-Indo-European root *dʰewh₂-, meaning to rise as smoke or dust, since early sacrifices were often burned so their smoke would carry upward to the gods.
