Etymology

The word comes from ancient Greek ἄστυ (asty, "city, town") joined to -νόμος, an agent element from νέμω ("to manage, allot, have charge of"). In classical city-states an astynomos was a magistrate who oversaw public order, streets, and markets. Modern Greek kept the word as the formal title for a mid-level police officer rank.
