Etymology
σέβομαι is an ancient deponent verb, built only in the middle voice though its meaning is active. In Homeric and Classical Greek it meant to feel religious awe or shrink back in reverence before a god or a sacred thing. Its exact prehistory is debated, but one proposal links it to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning to shrink from or hold in awe, with a possible far relative in Sanskrit. Over time the sense softened from religious dread to the everyday respect the word carries in Modern Greek.
