Etymology
Κοίτα is the imperative of κοιτάζω/κοιτάω, "to look, watch." The verb grew out of the noun κοίτη, "bed, resting place," so the oldest sense was closer to "to tend a bed" or "to watch over," before it settled into the everyday meaning "to look at." Κοίτη itself traces back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning "to lie down." In modern speech κοίτα has drifted further, into an all-purpose attention-getter at the start of a sentence, much like English "look," as in "look, here's the thing."
