Etymology

κοιτάζω grew out of κοίτη, the word for a bed or a resting place, with the verb-forming suffix -άζω attached to it. The original sense was to tend animals at their resting place, watching over the flock in its bed or lair. From watching over livestock, the meaning broadened to the general act of directing one's eyes at something. κοίτη itself belongs to the same family as κεῖμαι, to lie down.
