Etymology

The adjective comes from ήλεκτρον, the ancient Greek word for amber. Amber, when rubbed, attracts light objects, and this property gave its name to the whole phenomenon of electricity in early modern science. Greek built ηλεκτρικός in the 19th century as a scientific term, mirroring English electric, which itself was coined from Latin electricus in 1600. The root sense is literally amber-like.
