Etymology
The verb combines the prefix συν- (together, with) with the verb χωρώ (to give way, to make room, to have space for), from the noun χώρος (space, place). Together they originally meant something like to make room alongside someone, and this sense of yielding space shifted to mean letting go of a wrong, that is, forgiving. The ultimate origin of χώρος itself is not securely established, so no Proto-Indo-European root is given here.
