Etymology
γράφω comes from Ancient Greek γράφειν, which originally meant to scratch or incise, as when carving letters into stone or wax. Over time the sense narrowed to the general act of writing. Linguists connect the root to a Proto-Indo-European base meaning to scratch or carve, which also gave Germanic languages their word for carving.
