Etymology

Ελέγχω comes from Ancient Greek ἐλέγχω, which meant to cross-examine, put to shame, or refute. The related noun ἔλεγχος gave English the word elenchus, the term for Socrates' method of testing a claim through questioning. Linguists have not established a secure origin for the root beyond Greek itself. Over time the sense shifted from refuting or shaming someone to the modern meaning of checking or controlling something.
