Etymology
Τσιγάρο entered Greek from Ottoman Turkish sigara. Turkish took the word from a European source, likely French cigare or Spanish cigarro, terms that had spread across Europe with tobacco itself. Greek added its own neuter noun ending -ο to fit the borrowed stem into its grammar. The word therefore has no native Greek root and no reconstructable Indo-European origin.
