Etymology
Αστέρι descends from the ancient Greek ἀστήρ (astḗr), meaning star. Over time a diminutive form, ἀστέριον, gave rise to the modern neuter noun αστέρι, which took over as the everyday word for star while the ancient form survives in compounds and in the parallel word αστέρας. The root goes back to a very old Indo-European word for star.
