Etymology

The word comes from ancient Greek διαζύγιον, built from the prefix διά (apart, through) and ζυγόν (yoke). A married couple was pictured as two animals under one yoke, so a divorce was literally an unyoking. The modern form διαζύγιο kept this image while narrowing to the legal sense of ending a marriage.
