Word family

εγκατάλειψηabandonment
εγκαταλελειμμένοςabandoned, derelict
λείπωto be absent, to be missing
καταλείπωto leave behind, bequeath

Etymology

The verb combines two prefixes with the ancient verb λείπω, meaning to leave. Εν- adds the sense of into or in, and κατα- adds the sense of down or completely, so the compound originally meant something like to leave down and behind entirely. Over time it settled into the general sense of abandoning a person, place, or cause.
