Etymology

Μία is the feminine form of the Ancient Greek numeral for "one": εἷς (masculine), μία (feminine), ἕν (neuter). Modern Greek kept all three genders, and the unaccented spelling μια developed for its everyday use as an indefinite article, distinct from the accented μία used to stress the numeral value. The feminine form traces to a separate but related Proto-Indo-European base for "one" than the masculine and neuter forms.
