Etymology
From Ancient Greek εὐθύνη ('a setting straight, the calling of an official to account'), a deverbal noun from εὐθύνω ('to straighten, to direct, to call to account'). That verb derives from the adjective εὐθύς ('straight, direct'). The modern sense of 'responsibility/liability' grew out of the original idea of being held to account and set right.
