Etymology
From Ancient Greek τεράστιος meaning 'monstrous, prodigious, portentous', derived from τέρας (téras) 'a sign or portent from the gods, marvel, monster'. Something that was like a divine portent was awe-inspiring and outsized, and over time the sense narrowed in Modern Greek to plain 'enormous, huge'. The deeper origin of τέρας is uncertain and may be Pre-Greek.
