Επτά descends from Ancient Greek ἑπτά, the ordinary word for the number seven since Homeric times. It goes back to the Proto-Indo-European numeral for seven, which shows up with a rough breathing in Greek because the original initial *s became a rough breathing before a vowel. The colloquial spelling εφτά reflects the same word with the consonant cluster simplified in casual speech.
