Etymology
"Κάν'" is the colloquial clipped imperative of the verb κάνω ("to do, to make"), with the final vowel of κάνε elided in fast speech. Modern κάνω descends from Ancient Greek κάμνω (kámnō, "to work, toil, be weary"), the medial -μν- simplifying to -ν- over time. The original sense of laborious effort broadened into the all-purpose "do/make" of the modern language.
