Word family
Etymology
From Ancient Greek στρατηγός, a compound of στρατός 'army' and the stem of ἄγω 'to lead' — literally 'one who leads the army.' In classical Athens it denoted an elected military commander and magistrate, the office famously held by Pericles. The word passed into Latin and English as 'strategos' and underlies the family of 'strategy' and 'strategic.' Modern Greek keeps it as the highest general officer's rank.
