Etymology
δημόσιος derives from the ancient Greek δῆμος ('the people, the commons, a district') plus an adjectival suffix, giving the sense 'belonging to the people / of the state'. It has been in continuous use since antiquity, when τὸ δημόσιον could denote the public treasury or the state itself. The same root underlies δημοκρατία ('democracy') and the modern δῆμος ('municipality').
