Etymology
πίστη continues Ancient Greek πίστις (pístis) 'trust, faith, assurance', a derivative of the verb πείθω (peíthō) 'to persuade, win over'. The core idea is of being persuaded into trust or confidence. The root traces to PIE *bʰeydʰ- 'to trust, confide, persuade', the same root that produced the Latin fidēs family.
