Etymology

Modern Greek μύτη 'nose' comes from Byzantine/Medieval Greek and largely replaced Ancient Greek ῥίς in everyday speech. Its ultimate origin is debated; it is often connected with the same expressive root family as μύξα 'mucus, snot' and the verb μύζω 'to suck'. The word also extended naturally to mean the 'tip' or 'point' of objects.
