Etymology
From Ancient Greek ἔγκλημα ('accusation, charge, complaint'), a verbal noun built on ἐγκαλέω ('to call in, bring a charge against'), itself ἐν ('in, against') + καλέω ('to call, summon'). The original legal sense was the formal 'charge' laid against a person; in Modern Greek this shifted to the wrongful act itself — the 'crime'. The neuter -μα suffix marks the result of the action.
